Joining FAQs

Are you interested in joining Flutopia DFW? Please see below for some frequently asked questions.

Q: How do I join Flutopia? Do I have to audition?

A: There is no formal audition to be a part of our group. We encourage and welcome you to sit in and play with us a few times to get a feel for whether you might be comfortable with our level of play. Only some of us have music degrees; most just have a passion for playing flute. Then you can let us know if you’re interested in joining.

Q: Is there a minimum age to join Flutopia?

A: Yes. We ask that members be at least 18 years old.

Q: Do I need to have my own instrument(s) or other supplies?

A: Yes. We do not provide instruments, music stands, pencils, folders or instrument stands.

Q: How often does Flutopia play gigs?

A: On average we play for the public about 3 or 4 times a year. Due to Covid-19 some of our regular gigs have changed, but here is a list of places/times we have performed in the recent past.

  • TFS. (Texas Flute Society) has an annual convention one weekend in May somewhere in North Texas
  • Ronald McDonald House in Dallas, W.O.K.C. (Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer) annual family event
  • Holiday tunes gig at North Park Center in Dallas
  • Occasional performances at local retirement communities.

We are open to other suggestions, but prefer not to play at outdoor festivals, due to unpredictable weather.

Q: What if I have to miss a rehearsal of performance?

A: We all have families and other responsibilities that sometimes take priority and we understand that! We believe in “Family first.” We just ask that you let us know by e-mail or text or thru our site on MeetUp so we can reach out to members on our substitutes list.

Q: What other business should I know?

A: Flutopia is a 501(3)c, which means we are non-profit with a mission for education. One of our favorite gigs is at a local library. The group originated almost 20 years ago, although most of us are newer. We have an all-volunteer board that is made up of President/Artistic Director, Vice President, Librarian, Webmaster, Communications, Secretary, and Conductor.
